Berkner PTA 2015-16 Recap
Membership – 425 total members, including all full-time faculty and 55 students. This is up a few from 409 last year. Awards earned this year were MARS, Student Membership Achievement, Spring Increase and Golden Apple 100% Faculty, which was due to Mr. Meusa’s fundraising/member sponsorship program.
Programs – Successful partnership with the school for Meet the Teacher Night and RamNation Celebration. 2nd year for the Memorial Garden that illustrates the effects of drunk/distracted driving during Red Ribbon Week.
Hospitality – Lunches, breakfasts, treats and birthday cakes have shown our appreciation for this staff throughout the year.
Citizenship & Legislation – PTA has a new partnership with the school to provide cupcakes as incentives to new 18-year-olds to register to vote.
Used Book Fair – We collected, sorted, bagged, boxed and delivered 15,841 books to the RISD Council of PTAs Used Book Fair. BHS PTA received $3473.91 as our profit sharing amount. 8524 books have already been sorted and bagged for the 2017 sale.
Berkner Bazaar – We had 110 booths and made $7500 net profit.
Clothes Closet – We had a representative collect and deliver donations. She and other volunteers worked shifts.
Coffee House – Offered every Friday morning this year. Frozen drinks were new this year and very popular. Coffee House went mobile and made appearances in the theater lobby for shows/concerts, cafeteria for robotics tournament and Berkner Bazaar, and Senior Way for RamNation Celebration.
Communications – This is the 3rd year for the RAMblings email. It goes out to almost 1100 addresses every Sunday. Spanish translations were included for the first time this year. Our website berknerpta.org contains useful links and up-to-date information.
Spirit Wear – We sold t-shirts for the first time in at least 5 years.
Volunteers – Berkner High School earned the Platinum Award for reporting volunteer hours of at least 10x the number of students. Golden Apple outstanding volunteer awards were given to Teri Aguirre and Cindy Villela. Special recognition awards were given to Valerie Henisey for her work on the Crash program and Memorial Garden, to Bryan Shanafelt for weekly Coffee House and partnering with school groups to take the cart to their events, to Sami Gonzalez for translating RAMblings articles into Spanish every week, to Anna Braden for proactively getting and reporting volunteer hours and to Henry Hall for bringing new energy to the school.
Council Participation – We are the only high school to earn Council’s Shining Star Award this year for having a membership increase, participating fully in all Council projects, having up to date bylaws and attending Council meetings. Berkner PTA is represented on the Council Board.
